Man from Reno and Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter - LaF 72

For episode 72, LaF is reviewing two art house films that are available for streaming. Man from Reno is a mystery story set in San Francisco. A famous Japanese writer meets a mysterious man whose sudden disappearance leaves her with a suitcase as her only clue to finding him. Along the way she crosses paths with a small town sheriff who is trying to find his own mystery man. The second film has the L-Train and Mr. Two bitterly divided. Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter is about a jaded Japanese woman who travels to Fargo, North Dakota in the hope of finding the briefcase full of money from the movie Fargo. She believes that a worn out VHS tape of the movie is actually a treasure map to the fictional fortune. Find out why one host loved the film and why one will never recommend the movie to anyone.

Wee LaF for the August 21 Weekend - LaF 71

LaF is covering three big releases for the August 21 weekend on episode 71. American Ultra starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart is a stoner action comedy that has the government trying to kill their most dangerous and highest agent. This "high" concept film was written by Max Landis, the son of Blues Brothers director John Landis. Also opening, is the video game inspired action movie Hitman: Agent 47. The assassin with a bar code on the back of his neck is teaming up with a mysterious woman to help her find her father and kill lots of people. Lastly, is Sinister 2 the sequel to the 2012 sleep hit horror movie. A mother and her twin sons are trouble when they move into a scary rural house that is trying to kill them.

The Gift - LaF 70

LaF is back with another movie review for episode 70. The L-Train and Mr. Two-Frames are discussing the new feature film The Gift starring Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall, and Joel Edgerton. The movie centers around a young married couple whose lives are thrown into chaos when an old acquaintance from the husband's past won't leave them alone. Joel Edgerton wrote and directed this film in additional to playing the creepy Gordo "the Weirdo". Also, LaF discusses the thrillers as a whole, and why Mr. Two-Frames feels there are so many hidden gems in this genre.

Wee LaF for the August 14 Weekend - LaF 69

Summer might be ending, but LaF never stops. Episode 69 sees the L-Train and Mr. Two-Frames previewing two new films hitting theaters on August 14. Straight Outta Compton is a biopic from director F. Gary Gray which traces rap group NWA rise to fame. Set in California during the mid-1980s, the film explores how Ice Cube and Dr. Dre revolutionized Hip Hop. Also in wide release, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, and Alicia Vikander is a re-imagining of the 1960s spy tv show of the same name. Cavill and Hammer star as CIA and KGB operatives respectively, who must work together to prevent the sale of nuclear weapons and the end of the world.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation - LaF 68

This week on LaF, the guys are reviewing Mission Impossible Rogue Nation starring Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, and Rebecca Ferguson. For the fifth time, Tom Cruise plays Ethan Hunt who once again has to save the world with his own special brand of crazy stunts, car chases and running. The L-Train and Mr. Two-Frames are not in agreement about this film. Listen to them debate the merits of this film as an action film and the quality of the CGI.

Wee LaF for the August 7 Weekend - LaF 67

LaF is previewing three films for episode 67. The August 7th weekend is jammed packed with action, comedy, and thrillers opening in wide release. First up, is Fantastic Four starring Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell. Fox Films is trying to reboot this superhero series for the second time. This group of four youngsters must learn to use their newly gained powers to save Earth from Doctor Doom. Next actor Joel Edgerton tries out directing with The Gift, which he also wrote and stars in alongside Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall. This thriller sees a young married couple's lives thrown upside down after the arrival of man from the husband's past. The secret he has held onto for the last 20 years has the power to ruin everyone's life. Lastly, is Ricki and the Flash starring Meryl Streep as a musician who gave up everything for rock and roll, but through a twist of fate she has to return home to make everything alright with her family.

Go Set a Watchman - LaF 66

The literature and film podcast makes history this episode by talking about something other than film. That's right, the L-Train and Mr. Two-Frames are talking about literature. Both of our hosts have taught To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee for years. So they were over the moon to get their hands on Go Set a Watchman. This novel was originally written in 1955 by Harper Lee. It has been marketed as both a followup novel to TKAM and a first draft of TKAM. The guys are going to dig into this complicated history and do a little character analysis on this week's show.

Opening early on Wednesday is Vacation starring Ed Helms as Rusty Griswold and Christina Applegate as his wife Debbie. Like father, like son is Rusty's motto as his decides to relive his childhood by taking his family on a road trip to "Wally World". Opening on nearly 4,000 screens is Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation starring Tom Cruise. For a fifth time, Tom plays Ethan Hunt, a super spy whose amazing running ability will once again be put to the test as he tries to save the world.

Ant-Man - LaF 64

On Episode 64, the L-Train and Mr. Two-Frames are reviewing film Ant-Man. Marvel's newest superhero fare stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglass, Evangeline Lilly, and Corey Stoll. This blockbuster features the world's smallest hero trying to save the world by stealing a deadly weapon before it can be sold to Hydra. The tables are turned on the hosts this episode. Wee LaF for the July 24 Weekend - LaF 63

LaF is back and covering all the new releases for the July 24 weekend. Adam Sandler tries to regain his crown as King of Comedy with Pixels, also starring Kevin James, Josh Gad, and Peter Dinklage. These four must band together to save the world when aliens attack in the form of classic video games. Next up, is the Paper Towns, an adaptation of the same titled novel by award-winning author John Green(best known for writing The Fault in Our Stars). While none of the characters have cancer this time around, one of them has gone missing. Now it is up to Quentin(played by Nat Wolff) and his friends to go on a road trip to find Margo(played by Cara Delevingne) . Lastly, Oscar season starts early with Southpaw. Jake Gyllenhaal is out to prove the academy was wrong to not nominate him for best actor last year. He plays boxer Billy Hope in this Rocky-ish genre film. Jake must get up off the mat after losing his wife(Rachel McAdams) to a car accident, his daughter to child protection services, and his middleweight title. Helping him is his new trainer played by Forrest Whitaker.

LaF is featuring a special bonus episode this week as the fellas review Trainwreck. This Judd Apatow directed comedy stars Amy Schumer as a commitment-phobic writer who may have finally met Mr. Right when she is assigned to write about a sport surgeon played by Bill Hader. The L-Train and Mr. Two-Frames are joined in studio by the frequent guest The Magistar and listener Tony C. aka SuperFan. Find out who loved it, who liked it, and who forgot to laugh.

Featuring the world's smallest superhero whose diminutive size and colossal strength make him the only man capable of pulling off a heist to steal back the most dangerous weapon in the world. This is the final film in stage two of the Marvel Superhero universal. Next up, is the Judd Apatow's fifith directorial film Trainwreck starring Amy Schumer, Bill Hader, and Lebron James. This R-rated comedy was written by Amy Schumer and features her unique humor as she stars as a commitment-phobic career woman who has to face her fears when she finally finds Mr. Right.

Terminator Genisys - LaF 59

Arnold is back and ready to regain his throne as king of the action movie. Reprising the role that made him famous Arnold stars in Terminator: Genisys. This is the fifth film in the Terminator movie series. This time around Arnold must save Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese in both 1984 and 2017, all while preventing SkyNet from becoming active. Wee LaF for the July 10 Weekend - LaF 58

LaF is back with another Weekend Entertainment Edition as the L-Train and Mr. Two-Frames look at the new box office releases for the July 10th weekend. Opening in wide release, is the animated kids flick Minions, which is a spinoff to the Despicable Me film series. The film explores what the Minions were up to before they met Gru. It is also one of the L-Train's best eagerly anticipated films of the year.

Opening in fairly large release is the sci-fi action thriller Self/Less starring Ryan Reynolds, Matthew Goode, and Ben Kingsley. The movie is about a rich old man who buys the opportunity to switch bodies with a younger man. Unfortunately, the process is not without complications and soon it is a race against time to figure what the corporation that preformed the operation is really up to. Look for full reviews of both films on a future episode of LaF.

Talking about Shorts - LaF 57

Episode 57 of LaF features the L-Train and Mr. Two-Frames talking about short films. These mini movies can pack all the cinematic punch of a full length film and do it in 15 minutes or less.  Our hosts use them frequently in film classes to teach various aspects of the filmmaking process. The fellas have picked out five short films (Links at the bottom of the show notes) to discuss on today's show. At the 23 minute mark, the guys interview John Cunningham, the award winning director of BLT. Mr. Cunningham was kind enough to come on the show and talk about how he made BLT and Asylum.

Wee LaF for the July 3 Weekend - LaF 55

LaF is celebrating Independence Day with another Wee LaF. For episode 55, there are fireworks at the box office in the form of male strippers and killer robots. Channing Tatum is back with a sequel to his 2012 breakout film Magic Mike. This time the film is XXL as Mike and the crew are hitting the road to strip their way to Myrtle for one last blow-out performance. Also returning to a film series that made him a legend, is Arnold Schwarzenegger with Terminator: Genisys. For the fifth movie in the series, the action is going back to 1984 as Arnold has to once again save John And Sarah Connor. For people staying at home, the L-Train and Mr. Two-Frames have streaming and Redbox picks that are sure to please.
